Born in Inglewood, CA to Sherly Wilson Stewart, I was raised by a single mom who deserves a ton of credit for her achievements. My mother while raising me put herself through school and worked for the United States Department of Defense. That said, it took a village of people to guide me.
My uncle was a big sports fan and I grew up loving Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the Los Angeles Lakers. Magic Johnson and Jesus Christ were almost the perfect combination for me. Between Magic making impossible game winning shots with a smile on his face and Jesus Christ turning water into wine it was always a party (Just kidding. Kind of!)
Seriously, I grew up believing that all things are possible. My mother taught me how to ignore the naysayers and press on to a goal.
My goal was to play in the NBA. I worked at studying basketball, I worked through a divorce from my stepdad who abused us during middle school in high school. I worked through gang affiliations that surrounded me. I work through the conditioned racism that existed in the minorities that went to school with me. I even work through being the shortest guy on the high school basketball team. When you later find out that your biological father is only five foot seven inches, you reflect and wish you had of studied Spud Webb instead of Magic Johnson who was six foot nine inches tall!
None of that stopped me. I walked on to the University of Arizona's men's basketball team that was led by a Hall of Fame coach named Lute Olson. Coach O and his team had just come off a March madness final four appearance a year before I showed up on campus at five foot nine inches tall, weighing one hundred fifty-four pounds.
My sophomore year in college we won the March madness tournament beating 3 number one ranked opponents; Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky, Making us the NCAA national championship team in 1997.
Beating the odds has always been my calling card. It took a certain mentality, faith and motivated work ethic to build relationships that would propel me to my desired future.
Today I teach others how to beat the odds by building winning relationships, setting personalized and team goals while developing a mindset that can persevere when the sun is not shining on you and it's hard to keep motivated.
Th
e lessons I learned can be applied in just about any situation: work life school life and home life. If you or your team are in need of guidance and motivation to breakthrough the next level of maturity in your line of business or approach to a seemingly overwhelming task then I believe I can help.
